The Godfather · FRAME editorial
What can a doorway tell us?

One reading of the closing doorway is that authority comes at the expense of intimacy. Staying with Kay makes the separation something we experience rather than simply observe. Look for how the edge of the frame divides people who were just sharing a conversation.
Watch Kay at the end of The Godfather as the office door closes between her and Michael. Does that movement make his authority look more secure, or their relationship more fragile? Choose one detail in the framing that supports your reading.
A position outside a room can also become a position outside a relationship. Kay has visual access without belonging to the circle taking shape inside. The scene invites us to consider how a camera can make an exclusion felt without a character explaining it.
Return to The Godfather’s final office scene and watch it from Kay’s position. What can she see, and what is kept from her? How might the scene feel different if the final view remained inside the office with Michael instead of outside the closing door?

Watching from a distance separates what is visible from what can be known. The space between observation and explanation lets curiosity turn into suspicion. A useful reading keeps track of which details the image supplies and which connections we make ourselves.
Choose a moment of watching in Rear Window. List one detail you can actually see and one conclusion you draw from it. What information is missing, and how does that gap shape your response to the scene?
